Truck News
BRING ON THE GOOD NEWS: Is it just me, or has there been a recent surge in the amount of positive news for the trucking industry and the economy in general? Here are just a few highlights from the past couple weeks: The Canadian economy grew 5% in the fourth quarter, its strongest quarterly growth in a decade. The Canadian General Freight Index reported trucking rates,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which suffered a 9.6% freefall between December 2008 and December 2009, have since stabilized. Truck tonnage in the US spiked 3.1% in January, reaching its highest levels since September 2008. Also,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], US freight matching service Internet Truckstop keeps a real-time Market Demand Index that measures truck demand relative to available freight. The index for the first time since July 2008 recently surpassed a seven,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the key number that swings pricing leverage in favour of the motor carrier. Anything under a seven and the shipper or broker has the upper hand, according to the company.
And the most recent OTA Business Pulse e-Survey showed Ontario-based fleets are increasingly optimistic, with a record 52% voicing optimism over the prospects of the next three months. That marks the first time the majority of fleet respondents voiced optimism since the OTA launched the survey in 2008. By contrast, just 17% of respondents expressed optimism about the impending quarter in the Q1 2009 version of the survey. Oh yeah, and Canada won the Gold Medals in men's and women's hockey - life is indeed good!
TRAILER ROLLOVER?: Well, now you can…and you don't have to worry about the driver's safety, because it was all staged. PEI-based live bottom trailer manufacturer Trout River Industries has compiled this YouTube video to demonstrate just how easily a dump truck (or trailer) with a raised body can end up shiny side down.
Although it pained me to see a seemingly decent truck wrecked, it is worth watching as it's a bit startling to see just how quickly things can go wrong. (It should be pointed out some wet, sticky material was placed at the front of the trailer to encourage the rollover,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the company points out it's not an uncommon occurrence in the real world). Don't be alarmed about the apparent fuel spill, by the way, it was just vegetable oil. Trout River is now distributing the video for training purposes and, of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to encourage the use of live bottom trailers.
SPEED LIMITER INPUT WANTED: The Americans are taking a close look at implementing speed limiter laws of their own, and who better to ask for feedback than us Canucks? Whether you love'em or hate'em, the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) would like to know your opinion on the merits of speed limiters, specifically as they relate to safety and fuel consumption.
The research is aimed at documenting the impacts of speed limiter use versus non-use, and three years' fuel consumption and accident data is required to provide meaningful input. All the info will be kept confidential, the ATRI assures. TST Overland Express was presented a Platinum Service Award by Lowes. The carrier was one of only three LTL carriers in North America to win the award. TST handles Lowes' domestic and cross-border shipments.
TransX, meanwhile, has been named Walmart Canada's Carrier of the Year. That's quite the achievement, because Walmart can be, shall we say, a rather discriminating customer. TransX delivered 89,000 shipments to the retail giant with a 99.6% on-time delivery record. Pretty impressive. They also trained other Walmart carriers on how to effectively use long combination vehicles in Ontario and Quebec. While it may seem counterintuitive to teach your competitors how to gain an edge that will no doubt be used against you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it seems to have worked out for TransX.
And at the recent Truckload Carriers Association convention,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the usual suspects were raking in the hardware and packing it in their luggage for the return trip to Canada. Erb Transport (pictured) won the TCA's National Fleet Safety Award in the
15-24.99 million mile category and also the grand prize in the under 25 million mile category. MacKinnon Transport was first place in the 25-49.99 million mile category. And Bison Transport won first place in the over 100 million mile category. To qualify, a product or service has to clearly exhibit technical innovation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], have a wide applicability in the trucking industry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], offer significant benefits and be widely available. While complete vehicles are not eligible, components and systems are.
This year's winner was ArvinMeritor, which earned the award for its PlatinumShield aftermarket brake shoes. ArvinMeritor's PlatinumShield coating resists micro-abrasion caused by the movement of the brake lining against the shoe table during normal use and prohibits rust-jacking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where rust forms on bare shoe metal under the lining, causing the lining to lift and crack. Those of us on the committee (comprised of journalists from North American trucking publications) were impressed that the coating solves a long-running problem that's been a pain in the behinds of countless maintenance managers and owner/operators, particularly in these parts. Congratulations to ArvinMeritor - it was well-deserved!
AVOID PINCHING LCV LINES: Spring is here and Ontario's long combination vehicle (LCV) pilot program has resumed after a two-month winter hiatus. Carriers wasted little time in getting their LCVs back on the roads - I saw two east of Toronto on Mar. 2. I recently visited Glasvan Great Dane to discuss LCV equipment spec'ing and maintenance. Turns out, one of the most common sources of problems is the pinching of air and electrical lines when maneuvering in tight spaces such as the terminal yard.
To help avoid damage, consider tying the air and electrical lines together tightly like Glasvan customer Warren Gibson has done here. It's a simple fix that could save you some aggravation and expense.
A LASTING IMPRESSION: The events of Sept. 12,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 1993 are forever etched into the memory of Claudia Belair. That was the day her soul mate and professional trucker husband Jean-Claude suffered a fatal heart attack. Immersed in her own grief, Claudia realized she needed help in comforting her children, who were understandably hit hard by the loss of their father - particularly 12-year-old Marc. On a whim, she wrote a letter to then Truck News editor Brenda Yarrow (now Truck News sales rep Brenda Grant). What came next was a heartwarming story that Claudia has recounted in a new book called Roll On.
The letter that ran in Truck News just before Christmas struck a chord with readers, and soon after it appeared, Marc began receiving letters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], postcards and pictures from drivers all across Canada. The highlight of these gifts was a visit to local trucking company Big R Express, where Marc was given a chance to sit in all the trucks, presented with a company jacket and taken to lunch by the company's staff. He was able to live his dream of being a trucker for a day, which the company dubbed 'Marc Day.'
Belair describes her book as: "A true story about a young mother's struggle dealing with grief and loss, and how the Canadian trucking industry came to her rescue and the amazing events that took place to help her young son deal with the loss of his father."
Roll On is available direct from Claudia for $20 (just enough to cover her costs, by the way) + $2.35 shipping and handling. Champlain, PO Box 47017, LaSalle, QC, H8P 1B0. I've read the book and can tell you it is very well-written and truly heartwarming. In a perfect world, this would be required reading as it epitomizes everything that is special about this industry of ours. And you may even recognize a few names that are still around today.
WORTH REPEATING: During the recent Future of Trucking Symposium, Bison Transport CEO Don Streuber spoke of the changing priorities of the younger generation employee: "When I started working, I wanted to know how to make more money. We have people starting work today who say 'I realize I have overtime, but I would rather not have the money; can I take it as time off'?"
This is a common complaint I hear from old-school trucking execs, most of whom earned their stripes as drivers and worked their way to the top due to a strong work ethic. Perhaps it was best put by Kriska Transportation prez Mark Seymour during a 2008 Driving for Profit seminar: "With no disrespect intended to people who drive trucks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the older guard lived to drive. Today's new generation driver is lifestyle-motivated. If they worked somewhere else five days a week making $40,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000
(per year) and they come here and can make $40,000 in four days, they're not interested in making $50,000, they're interested in that day off."
When the driver shortage resurfaces as a top priority for trucking companies, just how will this industry, with its 60-hour work weeks and modest pay, appeal to the younger generation employee? If I had the answer to that question, I think I'd be able to parlay it into some serious coin. As it stands,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nobody knows and only time will tell how this dilemma will sort itself out.
A LOOK AHEAD: Hooked Up will be back in two weeks with more business tips and colourful quotes from Canadian trucking industry insiders.相关的主题文章:
