The History of the World Cup
This week we're celebrating the WORLD CUP, which is being hosted in South Africa this year. A soccer fan myself, I realized I hadn't really explored the humble beginnings of the tournament. So I did a little research,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and here is what I found:
Frenchman and footballer Jules Rimet came up with the idea to put on an international tournament in response to the growing interest in the game of football (soccer) in the late 1920's. The World Cup was scheduled for Uraguay, June 1930. In the aftermath of WWI,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and in the midst of a terrible economic depression, only 12 countries/teams competed. Not surprisingly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Uruguay beat Argentina, 42.
The next two world cups remained small and didn't garner much attention or popularity. However, in 1950 Brazil hosted,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], having built the world's largest football stadium in Rio. For the final game of the tournament,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a crowd of upwards of 200,000 showed up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to watch Uruguay beat Brazil 21. This match became known as the 'fatefun final' but it would lead Brazilians to become obsessed with winning and obsessed with the game, as they have produced powerhouse teams during the past 50 years.
