Still enthralled
SPENDING an hour watching The Farmer Wants A Wife is like jumping on an emotional rollercoaster.
There are plenty of ups and downs but, for this season's six lonely farmers and host Nat Gruzlewski, it's a ride they'll stay on all in the name of love.
And with four weddings, four engagements, two babies and another on the way, this lovedup reality television show's past boasts good odds.
Now halfway through season six, Clare Valley farmer Ben Wandel hopes these odds are in his favour, too.
"The prize is love at the end of it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Ben says. "So that's one of the reasons why I went on the show."
While Ben spends his days taking care of business on his sheep, cattle and cropping property, he spends his nights dreaming of "the one".
"I'm looking for someone who likes to get a little bit dirty on the farm, but can bring out the girlie girl too," he says.
"And while looks are important in the beginning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it then becomes more about how you get along with each other, how you feel together."
Keeping his cards close to his chest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ben's not giving away any of the show's secrets; nor will he disclose if he's any closer to standing at the top of the aisle.
"But I'll tell you this my Facebook is going crazy," he laughs. "A lot of random girls are getting on there at the moment it's pretty strange."
It's no wonder that the ladies are lining up to speak with Ben,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who is genuine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], intelligent and very cute. But the question stands: How on earth was he single before the show?
Gruzlewski says that "geography is often the worst enemy for a farmer's love life".
"They lead such isolated lifestyles and going on a date with the girl next door is often impossible," she says.
"We (on the show) are about bringing them the opportunity to find love. What you see is what you get with these farmers and, yes, they are quite oldfashioned in many ways, and certainly ready to settle down.
"I think their farm life is quite appealing to some girls, especially to those who are just tired of the city boys.
"Over the years, the unknown has always been alluring (for some female contestants) and the idea of being on television is exciting to some; but those girls don't go the distance and they certainly don't become farmers' wives."
The reason for the show's continued success, says Nat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is that unlike other reality shows, it isn't about the money.
"This show provides no financial gain," Nat says, smiling. "The only reward is love, and I think we can all identify and connect with what the farmers are experiencing. I guess we all want to be in love, so it's a heartwarming, feelgood show.
