Start of Evian Championship, the fifth LPGA major, postponed
EVIAN-LES-BAINS,gucci outlet online, France, Sept. 12 () -- Heavy rain in eastern France led to the postponement of the first round of the Evian Championship, the fifth major tournament on the LPGA calendar this year.More than 4 inches of rain had fallen on the Evian Resort Golf Club since Saturday. Rain Thursday led to the tee times being pushed back two hours but by midmorning rain had saturated the course, leading officials to declare it unplayable. The 15 players who had teed off Thursday will start their rounds over on Friday."The course was in very good shape heading into the last couple of weeks but the high temperatures really compacted the soil on the new course," said LPGA Senior Vice President of Tour Operations Heather Daly Donofrio. "With the excessive rain that we've had this week, the course is not able to absorb all the water."Officials said the first round will be played Friday with the second round set for Saturday, after which the field will be cut. The plan calls for 36 holes to be played Sunday.World No. 1 Inbee Park is the tournament defending champion, although the event was played last year in July before it was designated a major tournament.Park won the first three LPGA majors this year and Stacy Lewis, second in the world women's golf rankings, won the Women's British Open.
