Raconteur Courtenay loved a good story
He said he had been a storyteller ever since he was bullied in an orphanage as a child.
'Do I exaggerate? You bet I exaggerate,' he said. 'I take a fact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], put a top hat on it, a silk shirt and a bow tie and striped trousers and a tail coat and a pair of tap shoes and I do a Fred Astaire with a fact.
'But I don't ruin the fact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I never ruin the fact. I'm just giving it life.'
What is beyond doubt about Courtenay's life is that he burst onto Australia's - and the world's - publishing scene in 1989 with his first book, The Power Of One.
He went on to turn out another 20 page-turners,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most of them set in South Africa or Australia and full of plot and colourful characters.
Courtenay's books,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which include The Potato Factory, Tommo Hawk, Jessica, and Whitethorn,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], were enormously popular. 'Sometimes it's absurd, sometimes it's ridiculous, often it's laughable. And sometimes it's very close to being a lie.'
Arthur Bryce Courtenay was born on August 14,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 1933,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in a small town in the Lebombo Mountains to a single mother, Maude Jasmine Greer, a dressmaker and shop assistant.
She gave Bryce and his older sister,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Rosemary, the surname Courtenay, although their father was apparently Arthur Ryder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a married clothing salesman whom the children believed was their godfather.
In later life, Courtenay sometimes said he was an orphan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and at other times said he had been placed in an orphanage because his mother was poor and mentally unstable.
According to Courtenay, the orphanage was outside Duiwelskloof, at the base of the Limpopo mountains.
Fairfax journalist Jane Cadzow tracked down Courtenay's sister,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Rosemary Anderson, in the US for a Good Weekend article published early in 2012.
Anderson told Cadzow The Power Of One 'wasn't at all what our childhood had been' and expressed doubts about her brother's accounts of long and harrowing years spent in an orphanage.
Although the siblings had 'a difficult start in life' with their mother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was subject to nervous breakdowns,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Anderson said they had spent only 'a matter of weeks or months' in an orphanage when Bryce was five years old.
Courtenay was proud of his reputation for delivering manuscripts to his publishers on time. He wrote on his Facebook page: 'You will be pleased to know that I am currently feeling well, and am busy gardening, and writing a collection of short stories,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as being with our beloved pets.'
He told A Current Affair he wanted to be buried in a cardboard box. 'And then they are going to plant a tree on top of it - no tombstones, no here lies the old bugger', nothing - just a beautiful tree is going to grow up.'
Courtenay died at his Canberra home at 11.30pm on Thursday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], aged 79. Now, as my story draws to an end, may I say only, thank you. You have been simply wonderful.'
