Children's retailer Pipsneak is making the most of the boom times, prompting the company to bring forward its plans to start retailing online.
Also, there is talk of expanding the brand's reach nationally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with interstate enquiries already pouring in.
Parkside-based Pipsneak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], founded by Christian and Catherine Rugari,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], claims to stock the largest range of top brands in children's sneakers and styles in the one spot - a key growth area for the retailer - as well as clothing and accessories for kids aged zero to seven.
Pipsneak's sneaker range has been flying off the shelf in line with the national spike in sales of junior infant shoes, with revenues for the first month already 40 per cent above expectations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mr Rugari said.
Shoemaker Puma has seen a 34 per cent increase in sales of its junior-infant shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while Converse has seen infant business sales rise 25 per cent in the last 18 months.
The Australian Sporting Goods Association says children's athletic brands saw sales revenues increase 12 per cent in 2009,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but unit sales were up just five per cent.
However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there was substantial growth in 2008 with sales revenue up 20 per cent and unit sales up 18 per cent.
Australia has been riding a baby boom since 2007,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when there was the highest number of births since 1971.
South Australian fertility rates have also risen steadily since the Federal Government's Baby Bonus was introduced in 2004 with the latest figures showing the rate - the number of babies the average woman can expect to have - is now at 1.92,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the highest since 1975.
As a young father,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Christian was surprised by the lack of family friendly retail space in kids' stores,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which he says are largely not designed with kids in mind.
"The first surprise for me as a new dad shopping for my children was the lack of space for prams,'' Christian said. "Cat and I are about to have our third child,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so we know what it's like to struggle in a retail space. With Pipsneak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we saw a gap in the market to provide a niche service.''
"It's a store designed by parents for parents,'' he added.
Pipsneak's five-year plan is to open multiple stores in Adelaide,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but there is no decision on whether this expansion will be through a franchise model.
