UFC 171 is a wrap, and with three top-15 welterweights – including newly crowned divisional kingpin ?(16-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC) – earning victories, a new era in one of the UFC’s most historically competitive divisions is officially underway.
“Bigg Rigg” edged Robbie Lawler?(22-10 MMA, 7-4 UFC) by the narrowest of margins to win the vacant belt in the pay-per-view main event from Dallas’ American Airlines Center.
It was a moment of jubilance for Hendricks, but one that could also be short-lived if he isn’t careful. Welterweight contenders ?(13-2 MMA,MENS 2014, 3-1 UFC) and ?(34-4-1 MMA, 3-2 UFC) made their intentions known with wins over tough opponents on the main card, and both men are gunning for the new champion.
Beyond that, lightweight prospect ?(14-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) kept his flawless professional record intact while ?(15-5 MMA, 3-0 UFC) made quick work of his opponent in the pay-per-view opener.
After every event, fans wonder whom the winners will be matched up with next. And with another night of UFC action in the rearview mirror, it’s time to look forward, put on a pair of Joe Silva’s (and Sean Shelby’s) shoes, and play UFC matchmaker.

OVINCE ST. PREUX
Should fight:?
Why they should fight: With a 3-0 record in the UFC and a winner of 12 of his past 13 fights overall, St. Preux is ready for a step up in competition.
The light-heavyweight division, as many know, isn’t filled with a ton of depth. But if St. Preux wants to move to the next level, some potential opponents can get him there.
The most prominent of those options is Bader (16-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC), who is still without a fight after his lopsided decision win over Anthony Perosh in December.
“The Ultimate Fighter 8” winner has solid wrestling credentials and powerful strikes that would test St. Preux. It would also help determine if “OSP” can become a top-10 fighter at 205 pounds, or if he needs some more time to develop against the division’s lower tier.
HECTOR LOMBARD
Should fight:?
Why they should fight: Although it was just a few weeks ago when suggested MacDonald (16-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) should fight Matt Brown after his big win at UFC 170, a lot has changed in that time.
Firstly, Brown was booked for a May date with Brazilian slugger Erick Silva, meaning he’s out of the question as an opponent for MacDonald. Secondly, after seeing how easily Lombard dispatched of Jake Shields on Saturday, a matchup with “Ares” has become more compelling and could possibly even determine the next title challenger.
While UFC commentator Joe Rogan said on the UFC 171 broadcast that he’d like to see MacDonald fight for the belt immediately, it’s hard to ignore the fact the Canadian is just one fight removed from a loss to Lawler.
Lombard looks like a wrecking ball at 170 pounds, and while wins over two aging fighters in Shields and Nate Marquardt are impressive, they don’t have the same type of sizzle like one over a youngster like MacDonald would create. If Lombard wants a title shot in his new weight class, then this if the fight for him.
MYLES JURY
Should fight: Winner of ?vs. ?at UFC 172
Why they should fight: Five straight wins in the ultra-competitive UFC lightweight division is a momentous feat regardless of the opposition. With the signature win in that streak coming against Diego Sanchez, it’s clear “Fury” is ready for the next level of the game.
With an undefeated record and a high finishing rate, Jury has the potential to make some noise in the 155-pound division. Does he have the physical tools to stop some of the division’s most imposing forces, though? That’s where the real questions begin.
The winner of next month’s UFC 172 showdown between Miller (23-4 MMA,SUPRA SHOES, 13-3 UFC) and Green (22-5 MMA,Sweatshirts & Hoodies, 3-0 UFC) could help reveal many answers about Jury’s standing in the division. Both men have shared the octagon with the elite, and they’re often able to come out with the victory.
If there’s one thing Jury, Miller and Green have in common, it’s an ability to get the job done on fight night. If Jury could get this fight, it’d be interesting to see how he handles a crafty, experienced veteran who isn’t just trying to get in a brawl and take his head off.
TYRON WOODLEY
Should fight: Hendricks
Why they should fight: It’s unfortunate for Woodley that Carlos Condit’s knee injury took some steam off the significance of his victory over “The Natural Born Killer.”
Woodley looked sharped from the beginning of the fight when he landed some significant power shots and took the fight to the ground at will. The bout was his for the taking before Condit hurt himself defending a takedown – and moments later when a leg kick put him down for good.
Despite the nature of the loss, Woodley moves up in the pecking order and should be next for a crack at UFC gold.
While “The Chosen One” has had his setbacks, there’s no denying he’s a special talent. Back-to-back finishes of former title challengers in Condit and Josh Koscheck mean something. After stepping up to fight Condit when no one else would, Woodley deserves to be rewarded with the opportunity to challenge for a world championship.
JOHNY HENDRICKS
Should fight: Woodley
Why they should fight: Whether or not Hendricks wants to take some time off after two tough five-round fights in a span of four months is unknown, but few would be bothered if “Bigg Rigg” opted for a small rest.
Hendricks proved he can go toe-to-toe with another power-puncher when he defeated Lawler. But how would he fair against a power-puncher who also possesses a similarly strong wrestling game? That’s a question a fight with Woodley would answer.
Woodley’s combination of speed, athleticism,MBT Swala Sandals Women Walking Shoes Gold, power and wrestling ability is a look Hendricks has yet to see inside the octagon. While the UFC has several options available for Hendricks, it seems Woodley’s current skillset would present the sternest challenge.
