isn too unusual,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bowden said. of me living this long is because I have stayed active,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not just sitting and watching television. Being active keeps you young. may not find her decades of volunteering at the Gloria E. McClellan Senior Center unusual. Yet employees,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], volunteers and visitors said her presence has become an indispensable part of the center daily routine, which includes providing hot lunches for hundreds of seniors.
Carrying a newspaper,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bowden bustled into the lobby one day this week before the center opened. She made her way through the dining room, where a few volunteers were setting out coffee cups and festive red place mats. Last stop was the community kitchen, where Bowden scooped ice into her travel mug and greeted workers preparing lunch.
Then it was off to the senior center office. Checking her messages, Bowden unpacked some magazines and arranged a small pumpkin and vase of flowers on the counter above her desk. Leaning back in her chair,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she tried to summarize her job description.
Bowden also answers the phone all morning, double-checking the roster for seniors concerned about getting a ride to the center for lunch and confirming dining reservations.
She sometimes take a midmorning break for an exercise class.
The senior center serves lunch to 100 to 150 seniors each weekday. A small staff of paid workers and volunteers prepares the food, serves it and cleans up afterward. Prepared lunches also are sent out to four centers.

Lunch isn the only draw at the senior center, which offers classes ranging from the expected (aerobics and knitting) to the somewhat exotic (ukulele and Chinese medicine.) Visitors also can learn about health services, defensive driving and digital photography in the computer lab.
Volunteers pick up day-old baked goods donated by nearby grocery stories,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so seniors visiting the center can buy heavily discounted loaves of bread, doughnuts and hamburger buns.
They also can sign up for excursions. Upcoming trips include the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, the Crystal Cathedral,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Rose Parade and casinos in Laughlin, Nev.
Bowden, born in Illinois,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], grew up in Pasadena. Her second husband,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ernest Bowden, died in 1981. His goal had been to live near the coast after retirement, so they moved to Vista.
come to the conclusion that I work now because I never worked when I was married, said Bowden,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who has one daughter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
be strung up if she didn show up, joked program coordinator Leisa Bustanoby, who has worked with Bowden for 11 years. be lost without her. She handles everything. supervisor Walter Hartman remembers coming to work on his birthday and finding a card from Bowden on his desk.
