John Joseph Ryder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The death has taken place of Mr John Joseph Ryder, High Street, Westport,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a popular figure in the local parish community.
A native of Tonranny, Westport, he was the eldest of four sons born to Katie and Tom Ryder and was aged 77 years.
As a young man John Joe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as he was popularly known,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], worked in the Reliable Shoe Company in Westport, which later became Dubarry's Shoe Company. When it ceased trading John Joe was a central figure in the setting up of 'Westcoast Shoes' Co-operative Society, which gave valuable employment in the town for some time. His efforts and those of his colleagues to create much-needed jobs in Westport were very much appreciated at a time when jobs were quite scarce.
John Joe was a very creative person and was an avid student of horology, the art of making and repairing clocks and watches. His skills in this area were well known and people regularly brought their time-pieces to him to be repaired.
He was a quiet man who never wanted fuss of any kind in his life. His pastimes were simple. He was a very keen darts player and his prowess in the game was matched by few. As a younger man he won many darts competitions in the area, but never boasted of his achievements. He was also an excellent card player and had a particular fondness for the game of 25.
John Joe had excellent DIY skills, some of which often came in handy in his role as part-time fireman in Westport for many years. He was also a great supporter of local worthy causes within the community.
He will be very sadly missed by his wife Anne, sons Tom Ryder and family (Westport),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Kieran Ryder and family (Dublin), daughters Mary Conlon and family (Westport) and Christine Moran and family (Westport),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], brothers Michael Ryder (Westport), Tommy Ryder (Manchester) sisters-in-law Bridie and Annie-Mai,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], daughters-in-law Betty and Aileen Ryder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sons-in-law Brian Moran and Michael Conlon, nephews Thomas and Padraic Ryder and families and Tommie, Mark and John (Manchester), nieces Jacqueiline and Anne (Manchester), grandchildren Louisa, Laura, Jamie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Vicky, Ashling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Peter and Evan.
John Joe was predeceased by his brother Paddy in December 2007.
Following repose at McGing's Funeral Home, Westport,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], removal took place to St. Mary's Church,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Westport. Past and present members of Westport Fire Brigade flanked the hearse in a Guard of Honour en-route to the church. It was a poignant tribute to John Joe and to his son Tom, who is a serving member of Westport Fire Brigade.
Earlier large numbers of people had turned up at the funeral home to sympathise with John Joe's wife and family and many had their own happy memories to recount about him.
Fr Karl Burns officiated at the reception ceremony in St. Mary's,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], assisted by Fr Micheál MacGréil,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], SJ.
Fr Karl Burns was also celebrant at John Joe's Funeral Mass at which family members participated in the liturgy. His daughters Mary and Christine brought up the gifts while his grandchildren read the lessons and prayers of the faithful. Members of St Mary's Church Choir greatly enhanced the liturgy with their singing.
In his homily, Fr Burns paid tribute to John Joe for his role as a devoted husband,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], father and grandfather. He was also a man of great faith who was a loyal servant to his community and always had a caring attitude towards other people. He would be sadly missed by his immediate and extended family and his many friends.
