Jandamarra O'Shane celebrates his 18th birthday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Today, Jandamarra O'Shane possesses all the hallmarks of an affable, boisterous teenager. His hi-top sneakers are untied and the Woree State High School polo-shirt he wears has the collar flicked-up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just like Fonsi from Happy Days. A sparkly, silver mobile phone goes off incessantly while he's interviewed and photographed and his mum casts him the odd disapproving stare, just so he knows she's watching him. Jandamarra smiles, when asked to,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while having his picture taken,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it's clear he'd rather give a "tough guy" stare,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even while mum drapes one arm over his broad shoulders. The fact that it's his birthday, only adds to his swagger. Today, Jandamarra is a normal eighteen-year-old.
Cast your eyes away from his giant smile for a moment however, and only the scars, visible on Jandamarra's arms and head,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from an incident almost twelve years ago, would lead you to believe the keen dancer has endured something horrific.
When just six,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Janda", as he prefers to be called, suffered burns to 70 per cent of his body, after a man snuck onto North Cairns State School grounds and doused him in petrol, before lighting him on fire with a cigarrette lighter. School principal, Michael Aitken, put out the flames with his shirt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it was uncertain whether Janda would survive.
Janda's mum, Jenni Patterson, says she recalls first hearing her son's prognosis.
"The news that we got when he first landed in Brisbane hospital from doctors said that he definitely wasn't going to make it. So just to see him today." she says, her voice trailing off.
Janda did survive the initial traumatic hours after being attacked. Doctors still worried about the O'Shane's second eldest's condition though.
"Dr. Deborah Bailey told me he wasn't going to get through that night. She said if he did, the first three days would be very critical,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Jenni explains. "Once he got past the three days,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then the first month, I started to breath and just started to relax a little."
"I was just sharing with a friend of mine this morning, I was just afraid to leave his side in case he did pass away. If he was going to pass away, I wanted to have him in my arms."
Soon after the attack, Peter Wade Streeton surrendered himself to police. He was later sentenced to life in prison for the attempted murder of Janda. Upon reflection,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], both Janda and Jenni say they've forgiven him.
"At the time, I don't think we really had that much time to sort of think about him, or reflect, because the main thing was to get through [and] to be there for Jandamarra. It was touch and go, you know, so we just concentrated on getting Jandamarra better," explains Jenni. "When things did calm down a bit, I did think about him. I just couldn't understand why [Peter Wade Streeton did this] and . how you could hurt a little child, or any human being."
Janda says he can still remember the incident.
"I don't really talk about it that much, generally," he begins. "It's mostly like a blurry dream, I guess . I don't show any hate towards him, I guess the Lord helped me get over it."
Jenni says she's also discussed with Janda visiting his attacker and feels that the family is "strong enough" now to put the event behind them.
"I would like to go down and see him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she tells. "Just to let him know, personally, that we don't have any bitterness, or any ill-feeling towards him. We just hope it's going to help him to move on in life also and that he'll be a different person when he does come out of prison. Because I'd hate to be in his shoes, to be judged."
Janda, in turn, says he's moved on with his life and he doesn't often think about the day he was attacked.
"I guess when it did happen, it was so early [in my life] and to me this is just normal. It's something I got used to over the years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he says.
In the years since, he's become a successful Indigenous dancer and performs regularly around the region with schoolmates. However, physical activities, he admits, do tend to wear him out.
"My knees aren't the best," he confesses. "Same with my arms and my back. It's just like really bad aches in the joints. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to head back down to Brisbane or Townsville and get more skin grafts."
Janda estimates he'll probably need another "five" operations in the future. The aspiring auto electrician though, reveals the event has also taught him a valuable life lesson as well.
"If things get really bad for someone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just work at it," he tells. "Just stick at it . don't try and work your way around it and just, [get] straight into your problems."
Despite it being Jandamarra's birthday, mum, Jenni thinks perhaps she received the best gift of all.
"Just to see him today . I just felt absolutely on top of the world this morning. I just went into his room and woke him up [and said], 'Happy Birthday, my baby,' so . it's a good day," she beams.
Janda and Jenni walk off together back towards Woree State High School. It's been a busy day for the two, with mum taking the day off work and Janda arriving late for classes. Son is still fiddling with his phone while mum clamours for her child's affection. For a family that's endured the most extraordinary hardships and circumstances, the two still lead a normal life.
