IN MEMORY OF JUNIOR SEAU
The garland briefer than a girl's.
A couple of hours ago I saw the tragic news that ex-San Diego Charger Linebacker Junior Seau had committed suicide at age 43. His body was discovered in his Oceanside home by his girlfriend; a gun by his side. The former Charger star was a mortal lock to be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame, based on his 20 year career in the league, he played 13 seasons for the Chargers in addition to seasons with the Miami Dolphins and two separate stints with the New England Patriots.
In the days and weeks to come there will be interviews with friends; statements by those representing teams he played for,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Police Department in Oceanside, CA where he grew up and died and by various talking heads and experts on ESPN and the many NFL media outlets. People will try to come to grips with why a man in the prime of his life, decided that the time he had spent here on Earth was enough. I am sure that most of those people will be well meaning in their commentary and analysis. But in the end are no answers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], only speculation.
Seau apparently shot himself in the chest, similar to the way that former Chicago Bear Safety Dave Duerson ended his life in February of 2011. Duerson left a lengthy document asking that his family have his brain inspected upon autopsy in order to determine if he was suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE); a brain disease that researchers believe is caused by multiple concussions or brain trauma incidents. A number of doctors and research scientists believe that CTE and the psychological and emotional disorders suffered by many current and former NFL players are in large part caused by brain trauma.
It is not know at this point if Seau suffered from depression or mood swings or headaches or any of the physical and\or mental symptoms associated with CTE or multiple concussions; or any other physical issues as a result of his long NFL career. But the manner of his death and the length of his career, certainly argues for an independent autopsy; an examination of his brain by the top research people in the CTE\sports concussion community(Boston University having the best research program in the world in this area); and a careful review of the findings by doctors and researchers not associated with the NFL or the San Diego Chargers.
This is simply happening too often. Men walk away from this violent game and in the matter of a few short years, die by their own hand; or by overdoses connected to the ingestion of massive amounts of pain killers ingested over a relatively short period of time. The research has not demonstrated that there is an absolute link between CTE and suicide or overdose or the violent death by of both pro football players and NHL professional hockey players. But post mortem examinations of men found to have died by suicide (Duerson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], former Philadelphia Eagle safety Andre Waters, former Houston Oiler and Miami Dolphin linebacker John Grimsley and University of Pennsylvania player Owen Thomas) have all revealed symptomology consistent with CTE; as did the brain of car accident victim (Cincinnati Bengal wideout Chris Henry) in 2009.
The brains of a number of retired players have also shown degenerative patterns consistent with CTE and repeated brain injury,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], despite their death from causes These cases include Baltimore Colt tight end John Mackey, Pittsburgh Steeler center Mike Webster, Minnesota Viking linebacker Wally Hilgenberg and former running back Cookie Gilchrist who played for the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos and many Canadian Football League teams in a storied pro football career.
Seau may well have died from causes if there can be such a thing when a healthy 43 year old man points a handgun at his chest and pulls the trigger. Forensic examination may show that he was perfectly healthy and not afflicted with brain trauma from 20 seasons of racing into harms way and giving up his body in order to stop opposing offenses from advancing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It may well be that problems caused his suicide as the early (and idiotic and ineffably hopeful) statement issued by the Oceanside Police Department would lead one to believe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. But I would be very much surprised if that turned out to be the case and in many aspects that would be a much sadder and difficult to understand or accept outcome.
Seau left four children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a girlfriend, an ex-wife, and many family members and friends; in addition to I would think at least hundreds of thousands of fans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if not more. He was an absolutely phenomenal player. There are people who are born to do what they do, and Junior Seau was simply put on Earth to play linebacker. According to the official NFL statistics Seau was 6 and weighed 250 pounds, but anyone who ever saw him play knew that he was much smaller than that and unbelievably fast and quick and reactive. He managed to cover the whole field and in addition to having great hands and instincts, he was a sure tackler in an era where getting the ball carrier on the ground seems to be a lost art.
I am sure that a lot of people who watched him play or met him a few times will say and\or will feel as though they knew him well. I had the great fortune to both work out myself and train clients at the gym in Pacific Beach where Seau trained during the off season during his career with the San Diego Chargers. I never really spoke to him much beyond or up? or morning but I watched him train or worked out in the gym while he trained; on an almost daily basis for months at a time during the many off seasons of his career,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. He always trained in shorts and a tank top or t-shirt and flip flops,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I don think that I ever saw him wear workout shoes or sneakers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Even walking on the treadmill or using the elliptical trainer or exercise bike he wore flip flops,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The rare times that I saw him run on the treadmill he ran barefoot.
It was a little quirky, but it was also as consistent as his workouts. He trained hard for at least three or four hours plus every weekday in the off season. He stretched,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he did core work,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he lifted weights, he did cardio and he did it all with a quiet and determined and consistent focus. When you saw him play you realized that his explosiveness and stamina and relentlessness was natural, was a great series of gifts, but also that they were gifts that had been honed to the sword's edge over a very long period of time. I think it must have been very hard for him to stop playing professional football, and as much as he loved surfing and other physical activities, his life must have been different without something to focus his relentless nature on for hours at a time each day. Add to that the crisis of health potentially bought on by CTE or associated physical and\or mental issues and it is not very difficult to envision scenarios where leaving seemed a much better way to go, than waiting for the sad painful and inevitable decline.
Maybe it is delusional, or just a way to deal with the pain of loss,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the imagining of what his family and close friends are going through today; but I will always see him in the gym soaked in sweat pushing through one more perfect rep or wearing number 55 and sprinting across the field in pursuit of another sack or another elusive running back. I cannot bear to think about his destroyed body lying in the bedroom of his house this morning or the fact that his enthusiasm and spirit and joy for life and training and playing are gone from us so soon.
