Collecting the 1955 Topps baseball card set
The 1955 Topps baseball card set is one of my favorite sets,http://rogervivieroutlet.webmium.com/. It's considered one of Topps' all time best looking sets and one of the most affordable,Duvetica piumini italy. The set contains only 206 cards which make it one of the smaller sets Topps has ever produced, duvetica down jackets men. Topps battled with Bowman for player contracts and as a result not all of the players are represented in this set.
This was Topps first year using a horizontal layout. The cards are vibrant; the colors pop and really make the photographs stand out against the background. The cards are also larger than today's cards, (2 5/8" x 3 ¾") which enabled Topps to add a blown up portrait and action shot of each player on the front of their card. In addition,Parajumpers Jakker, Topps added a facsimile autograph of the player on the front of each card. Overall a lot of thought went into the aesthetics of this set.
I like the head shot and the full action pose on every card; it makes the players recognizable. In an era when TVs were not in every household and most games were played during the day,Moncler Jassen Goedkope, kids would still be able to recognize the ball players because of the great photos on their baseball cards. And going forward we will always be able to see what these players looked like in their prime.
I also like this set because it still has teams like the NY Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers, Milwaukee Braves and Kansas City Athletics who have all since changed cities. For some reason the Washington Senators are called the Nationals in this set too. The set has beautifully drawn team logos on each card as well giving you a sense of history with each one. You can see how team logos have changed over the years. Take a look at the Cincinnati Redlegs, which is just priceless to me.
The complete set is numbered to 210 but only 204 actual cards were printed. It's not known who was supposed to appear on the other six cards. The most important cards in this set are the rookie cards of Hall of Famers Sandy Koufax #123, Harmon Killebrew #124 and Roberto Clemente #164. These players only appeared in Topps that year giving collectors another reason why to collect this set. Seventeen players went on to make the Hall of Famer including Ted Williams,Duvetica Vest, Hank Aaron,http://woolrichoutlet.albirank.net/, Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider and Yogi Berra. Other notables in this set are the Don Zimmer rookie card and possible Hall of Famer Gil Hodges, both from the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Bowman was in competition with Topps and really wanted to oust them from the business. They both tried to sign as many ball players to exclusive contracts as they could. In the end Bowman had signed 304 players and umpires including twenty eight future Hall of Famers to their set. Seventeen HoFers were exclusive to Bowman including Mickey Mantle, Roy Campanella,Woolrich Arctic Jacket Deutschland, Whitey Ford, duvetica jackets canada online outlet, and Pee Wee Reese. Only seven Hall of Famers appeared in both sets. Stan Musial was the lone hold out and did not appear on any card from 1954 to 1957.
During 1955 Topps issued their cards in two series. Cards #1 to #160 were in available in packs all season but cards #161 to #210, considered high numbers, were only put in packs at the end of summer. Baseball card sales were not as vigorous in September because of the football season so Topps didn't print as many high number cards, discount merrell merrell boots, making them more sought after and more valuable.
The '55 set has the same scarcity problems as the other sets issued in the '50s. Topps used to dispose of their unsold wax cases by dumping them into the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of New Jersey. It's believed that 1955 was the first year that Topps discounted their surplus to stores instead, thus making them slightly more plentiful than the 1952 and 1953 sets.
Condition is always a problem with baseball cards. They were made of cardboard and weren't expected to hold up. Kids traded cards,Roger Vivier Shoes UK, flipped cards, duvetica jackets shop, put them in the spokes of their wheels, carried them around in their pockets and thoroughly enjoyed them. They didn't open packs and quickly put the cards into plastic holders and tuck them away in the closet. They were everywhere, duvetica canada, kids played with them like other toys and this is why moms back then had such an impact on the future of the card market. Some mom's threw away cards. This created the market we've known for the last 30 years.
Chipping is an issue with this set. The white border tends to chip because of the paper stock Topps used. This makes finding high grade examples scarce. Color is usually very good on the cards and there aren't many printing errors,Cheap Moncler Down Jackets For Men moncler coats outlet on sale, blemishes or blurring like in sets during the '70s and '80s. Nor are there many centering issues or mis-cuts since Topps actually cared about putting a great product then.
Being that the set only contains 204 cards it's not that difficult to put together. There are some really great players in this set and it is just beautiful. Most of the cards are affordable and easily found on auction sites,Woolrich Arctic Jacket Shop, shows and stores. If you have a set you would like me to discuss email me and let me know what you think.
